Alaska Association of Energy Professionals


Our leadership consists of an elected board of directors responsible for governing and providing oversight for the association affairs. The organization structure is made up of various committees, chaired by board members who provide over-site and direction to utilize the talent and expertise of a diverse membership to advocate the mission of AAEP.

Members of our Board of Directors are of high character and integrity who maintain an excellent reputation in the industry and certify their credentials.

The core purpose of AAEP to advocate for sensible, safe, healthy and energy efficient structures. It is the charge of our leadership team to drive a professional dialogue to that end.

Emmett Leffel - President
Alaska Thermal Imaging LLC

Emmett was born and raised in Homer, Alaska. Between commercial fishing in Homer and Kodiak along with pipe-lining in Prudhoe Bay he has traveled and worked across most of Alaska. After 10 years as a UA Pipefitter/Plumber Journeyman, Emmett switched careers into energy consulting and the building diagnostics field. He currently travels the state helping Homeowners, Businesses, Contractors and Nonprofit Organizations to diagnose comfort, durability and health issues associated with building science. He is a USGBC LEED For Homes Green Rater and LEED Green Associate, AHFC certified Energy Rater, BPI Building Analyst, Certified Thermographer and he has recently added RESNET QAD. In addition to these he maintains a Mechanical Administrative and State Plumbing Licenses in the State of Alaska. He is part owner in several businesses including Alaska Thermal Imaging LLC which specializes in large commercial air leakage testing and consulting. He has recently completed one of the largest air leakage tests in the State of Alaska on an 111,000 square foot building.  Emmett is proud to be on the board of directors for AAEP (Alaska Association of Energy Professionals).

Jerry Herring
Central Alaska Engineering Co

Jerry is the principal mechanical engineer at Central Alaska Engineering Company which was established in 1991 and specializes in providing mechanical engineering design services including HVAC, piping and plumbing, commercial kitchen design and renewable energy projects.  Jerry is also an AHFC approved energy rater and a BEES compliance inspector, ICC certified residential combination inspector and AEE certified energy auditor.

Steve Wisdom - Secretary & Treasurer
Wisdom & Associates Inc

Steve is the President of Wisdom & Associates, Inc. Steve has more than 35 years of experience in the construction industry and 21 years in Alaska performing inspections, residential energy ratings, commercial energy audits & indoor air quality investigations. Steve is a certified code compliance and existing home inspector holding multiple certifications in both residential and commercial fields. His certifications include Residential & Commercial Building Inspector, Residential & Commercial Plumbing Inspector (IMAPO & International), Residential & Commercial Mechanical Inspector and Residential Electrical Inspector. He is also a Certified Energy Rater, Certified Energy Auditor, as well as a Building Analyst and Envelope Specialist.

Rich Owens
Residential Energy Designs

Richard was born in Anchorage, Alaska. He spent part of his childhood there before moving to Wrangell, Alaska. Wrangell is where he graduated high school; he would travel back and forth to commercial fish there while he was attending Oregon State University. 

He graduated from OSU with a Bachelor’s degree in Science. After returning to Alaska, he began working as project manager and associate inspector for Owens Construction Management Services, Inc. He went on to complete other projects as his own general contractor. As his interest in cold climate building and diagnostics grew, he became an Alaska certified energy rater. He has been a certified energy rater for 12 years working all over Alaska with many homeowners and general contractors. His certifications include Associate Home Inspector, Resnet HERS Energy Rater, BPI Building Analyst Professional, and Alaska AHFC certified energy rater. Rich currently runs his own business, Residential Energy Designs with his wife Ardena.

Robert Bensin
Bearing Straits Native Corp.

Electrical Administrator, Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Division Manager. Residing in Nome Alaska, Robert Bensin works for a general contracting subsidiary of Bering Straits Native Corporation. In addition to managing the electrical department it is the broad knowledge of the challenges faced in rural Alaska communities that has driven the commitment to dedicate an energy efficiency and renewable energy division to help educate, develop and implement projects that achieve a lower cost of living, reduction of our carbon foot print and promote a healthy living environment. Robert has expertise performing residential, commercial and institutional energy audits, developing and implementing high yield energy efficiency measures, renewable energy installations including solar PV, wind, solar thermal and off grid hybrid systems. AHFC Certified Energy Rater, NCCER Certified Specialty Trade Instructor, BPI Certified, State of Alaska Electrical Administrator, Certified Tower Safety and Rescue Instructor, Member of IAEI and NFPA.

Dave Harrell 
Harrell Construction Services

 Dave is an AHFC Certified Energy Rater, BPI Certified Building Analyst and licensed General Contractor living in Talkeetna. He has been building and remodeling homes in South central Alaska since the 1990's and is passionate about energy efficiency and quality. He has experience with nearly every aspect of residential construction from design to finish. Many of the construction projects he has worked on have achieved 5 star plus or better including some of the first "outsulated" (REMOTE) buildings in the Talkeetna area. As a carpenter and contractor, he has led deep energy retrofits which have resulted in substantial energy savings while adding value to the buildings. He has performed hundreds of energy audits statewide including  Southeast, the Aleutian Islands, the Alaska Peninsula, Interior and Anchorage . Dave is currently studying passive and active solar thermal energy systems, having integrated a four season greenhouse into the design of his own home producing vegetables year round .
